Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to exchange my licence after moving to Alberta?

New permanent residents must exchange within 90 days, even if they travel outside Alberta during that time.

Do I need to take a test to exchange a licence from another province?

No. An equivalent Class 3 to 6 licence from another Canadian province or territory is exchanged without a knowledge or road test. With less than two years of experience you may enter the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.

Can I exchange a licence from the United States?

Yes. Equivalent US Class 5, 6 and 7 licences are exchanged without extra tests.

What if my country has no agreement with Alberta?

You take the knowledge test and the road test, and surrender your licence. The Special Investigations Unit can assess documents for an exemption from GDL experience requirements.

Do I get my old licence back?

No. All non-Alberta licences, even expired ones, are surrendered and not returned.

Can I drive in Alberta with a foreign licence as a visitor?

Visitors can use a valid licence from home for up to one year. An International Driving Permit is recommended if your licence is not in English; carry the original licence too.
