Frequently asked questions
How do I book a road test in Alberta?
Class 5 and Class 6 road tests are booked through an authorized registry agent, either at the counter or through the booking portal linked from the registry. You need your MVID number, to be eligible for the test, a vehicle that meets the requirements, and no unpaid fines.
How much is a Class 5 road test in Alberta?
The government fee is $7.00. On top of that, each registry sets its own service charge for road tests, which is not capped, so the total varies between registries. Ask for the price when you book.
Is there still an advanced road test?
No. Since April 1, 2023, drivers no longer need an advanced road test to exit the graduated driver licensing (GDL) program.
When can I take the Class 5 road test?
For a Class 5 GDL licence you must be at least 16 and have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least 12 months. Applicants under 18 need a parent or guardian's consent.
Who conducts commercial road tests?
Class 1, 2 and 3 road tests are conducted by government driver examiners. They have a fixed government fee that already includes a capped $28 registry service charge: $217 for Class 1, $167 for Class 2 and $155 for Class 3.
