From learner to full licence
- Class 7 learner's licence (age 14+): knowledge test and vision screening. Under 18 needs parental consent.
- Practise for at least 12 months with a fully licensed supervising driver.
- Class 5 GDL road test (age 16+), booked through a road test registry.
- Exit GDL: since April 1, 2023 no advanced road test is required.
What to bring
- Proof of identity and legal status in Canada, and proof of Alberta residency.
- Your glasses or contact lenses if you need them, for the vision screening.
- For under-18 applicants: a parent or guardian to give consent.

How many questions are on the Alberta Class 7 knowledge test?
The test has 30 questions and you need at least 25 correct answers to pass.
How much is the knowledge test?
A $5.00 government fee plus up to $12.60 registry service charge, so $17.60 at most. The oral or oral-assisted version has a higher maximum service charge ($26.25).
What happens if I fail?
You can retake it, but only once per day, and every attempt is paid again.
How old do I have to be?
You can get a Class 7 learner's licence from age 14, after passing the knowledge test and a vision screening. Under-18 applicants need a parent or guardian's consent.
Is the Class 7 a road test?
No. Class 7 is the learner's licence and only requires the knowledge test and vision screening. The road test comes later, for the Class 5 licence.
